It is reported that MVRDV has created a76,000-square-meter tower precinct that will become the centerpiece of the newMakers District in Abu Dhabi. Called Pixel, the project was designed in tandemwith local practice Dewan Architects + Engineers, and also includes BjarkeIngels Group (BIG).

The development will facilitate a range ofuses in seven towers, wrapping around the BIG-designed central plaza. Retailspace, offices, co-working and community areas will occupy 15,000 square metersof the lower levels, while 480 residential apartments will rise above.

MVRDV has redefined what it calls the"typical penthouse approach" by offering studio apartments on everylevel, and shifting the larger units across the third, fourth, and fifthfloors, where they look onto the pedestrianized plaza below.

Architecturally, the development takes theform of a series of stacked cubes that move away from the central plaza andthen extrude vertically. Ceramic and concrete façades respond to the climaticrealities of Abu Dhabi, and the orientation of the towers has been optimized toconsider natural sunlight and views. This project is targeting to achieve afull completion in the year of 2020.
